San Diego FC vs. Portland Timbers – Game 2 Preview
Saturday Night – Providence Park, Portland
Heard live on San Diego Sports 760 AM
San Diego FC is one win away from moving on in the MLS Cup Playoffs. After taking Game 1 at Snapdragon Stadium 2–1, they head to Portland this Saturday night for Game 2 of their first-round best-of-three series against the Timbers.
In Game 1, Onni Valakari and Anders Dreyer scored early to give San Diego control, while Portland pulled one back before halftime but couldn’t find the equalizer. The Timbers went down to ten men in the second half, and San Diego held strong to secure their first-ever playoff win.
Now the challenge gets tougher. Portland is fighting to keep its season alive in front of a packed Providence Park crowd. If the Timbers win, the series shifts back to San Diego for a decisive Game 3 next weekend. If San Diego wins, they move on to the Western Conference Semifinals in their inaugural season.
Key things to watch Saturday:
- Can San Diego keep their composure and finish the job on the road?
- Will star forward Hirving “Chucky” Lozano return to the lineup after missing Game 1?
- Can Portland feed off their home fans and respond with more energy and discipline?
Head coach Mikey Varas has emphasized focus and consistency: “We can’t think ahead. We have to finish the series the right way.”
Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM Saturday night in Portland.
