The committee that ranks teams for the College Football Playoff (CFP) has included the SDSU Aztecs for the first time, with a position of No. 24 in their 2021 rankings.
The Aztecs are currently (7-1), just one spot behind the Bulldogs (7-2).
So far this season, the Aztecs have ranked:
- No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches poll
- No. 21 in the AP poll
- No. 24 in the College Football Playoff
CFP matches the No. 1 ranked team vs. No. 4, and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in semifinal games that rotate each year among the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Capital One Orange Bowl, Allstate Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl Game.
The Playoff Semifinals this year will be Dec. 31 at the Cotton Bowl and Orange Bowl. The CFP national championship is Jan. 10, 2022, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The CFP committee is comprised of "a talented group of 13 high-integrity individuals," according to collegefootballplayoff.com. This year's members include: Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart, Iowa AD Gary Barta (chair), Arizona State professor (and former sports columnist) Paola Boivin, Wyoming AD Tom Burman, Georgia State AD Charlie Cobb, North Carolina State AD Boo Corrigan, Colorado AD Rick George, former Nebraska offensive lineman Will Shields, Kansas State AD Gene Taylor, Virginia Commonwealth VP for Athletics and Community Wellness Joe Taylor, former Penn State offensive lineman John Urschel, Entergy Corporation group President Rod West and former Stanford/Notre Dame/Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham.
