San Diego County has is expanding an agricultural quarantine to include Spring Valley. This after the State Department of Food and Agriculture says they found a mated female Mexican fruit fly in the area.
In March, the quarantine area was isolated to 76-square-miles bordered by El Cajon, Proctor Valley, lemon Grove and McGinty mountain.
Sterile male Mexican fruit flies will be released in the area to help with eradication efforts. The sterile flies will mate with female flies but will produce no offspring, leading to a decrease in the population.
The pests lay their eggs inside the fruit or vegetables, and then the larvae eat the inside, causing it to rot.
