Oceanside is building an off-shore artificial reef to slow beach erosion.
The project will cost between 30 and 50-million dollars for sand replenishment and an additional 30-million for construction. Officials say the process will involve building a reef about 900 feet offshore in an area that is currently dominated by rocks.
They will then truck in sand with hopes the reef will prevent further sand erosion.
Oceanside’s Coastal Zone Administrator says the RE:BEACH project will improve conditions for beachgoers and surfers. Oceanside has applied for state grants and funding through California’s climate bond, Proposition 4.
Construction is expected to start by late 2027 or early 2028.
