San Diego Budget Is Set, But Battle Continues

After tense back and forth debates between the council and Mayor Todd Gloria, San Diego has a new budget. The goal is to balance a deficit of $258 million dollars.

This comes after council members voted 6-3 Monday to pass the final fiscal year 2025-26 budget. The six votes were enough to override several of Mayor Todd Gloria's line item vetoes. Those included maintaining current library and recreation centers hours and access to two city reservoirs.

Mayor Gloria released a statement which read he's concerned these actions could still weaken the city's ability to stay on stable financial footing.

The Mayor's office says the city could still see midyear cuts, layoffs and brownouts.

The move comes after contentious back and forth debates between the council and the Mayor on how to close a $258 million dollar deficit. The budget goes into effect July 1st.
