County Health Official Charged In Fatal Hit-And-Run

A San Diego County health official is facing charges in a deadly hit-and-run crash.

Prosecutors say Deputy Health and Human Services Director Assmaa Elayyat has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run in connection with a crash that killed a woman waiting at a bus stop in the Southcrest neighborhood last month.

Investigators say a vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, went onto a sidewalk and struck the victim before leaving the scene.

Court records show the defendant's attorneys cited emotional distress stemming from the recent shootings at the Islamic Center of San Diego as part of a request to modify her release conditions. Elayyat is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
