Bill Walton, San Diegan and NBA Hall of Famer Loses Battle with Cancer

The NBA announced Monday that Hall of Fame Center, two-time NBA Champion, and San Diego icon Bill Walton had died at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer.

After learning of Bill Walton’s death, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement:

"Bill Walton was truly one of a kind. As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position. His unique all-around skills made him a dominant force at UCLA and led to an NBA regular-season and Finals MVP, two NBA championships and a spot on the NBA’s 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. Bill then translated his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game to broadcasting, where he delivered insightful and colorful commentary which entertained generations of basketball fans. But what I will remember most about him was his zest for life. He was a regular presence at league events – always upbeat, smiling ear to ear and looking to share his wisdom and warmth. I treasured our close friendship, envied his boundless energy and admired the time he took with every person he encountered.”

That zest for life was felt by all of San Diego. Bill Walton owned a home near Balboa and was often seen riding his bike, attending local concerts, and always smiling and enjoying the beauty of San Diego.

Walton’s roots were always planted in San Diego. He was born in La Mesa and grew up in a hillside home just below Lake Murray. He attended Helix High School, where he became the most accomplished boys basketball player in San Diego history.

"As a cherished member of the NBA family for 50 years, Bill will be deeply missed by all those who came to know and love him," Silver continued. "My heartfelt condolences to Bill’s wife, Lori; his sons, Adam, Nate, Luke and Chris; and his many friends and colleagues."

In addition to basketball, Walton was also a big fan of the Grateful Dead. He had his own satellite radio show called "One More Saturday Night" on Sirius Radio’s Jam On and XM Radio’s Grateful Dead channels.

Walton will be forever remembered just like some Grateful Dead lyrics that he loved so much…

“Don’t forget to laugh, spread cheer, and have fun.”

Rest Easy Bill.
